"Whenever a Christian encounters a cultist, certain primary thoughts must be paramount in his mind:

1. The average cultist knows his own terminology very thoroughly. He also has a historic knowledge of Christian usage and is therefore prepared to discuss many areas of Christian theology intelligently.

2. The well-trained cultist will carefully avoid definition of terms concerning cardinal doctrines such as the Trinity, the deity of Christ, the Atonement, the bodily resurrection of our Lord, the process of salvation by grace and justification by faith. If pressed in these areas, he will redefine the terms to fit the semantic framework of orthodoxy unless he is forced to define his terms explicitly.

3. The informed Christian must seek for a point of departure, preferably the authority of the Scriptures, which can become a powerful and useful tool in the hands of the Christian, if properly exercised.

4. The concerned Christian worker must familiarize himself to some extent with the terminology of the major cult systems if he is to enjoy any measure of success in understanding the cultist’s mind when bearing a witness for Christ."

Hello Carolina U Students!!!

Can you believe your first semester of your Fall Classes is almost over!!! Give yourself a high five as you are doing a great job to the glory of G-d in your Christian education studies.
Start preparing yourself for your upcoming Finals week (Week of October 10, 2011).

Remember you have already passed the greatest test you will ever have to take!! Which is what? If you can answer that, and you are enrolled in a class being instructed by Dr. Powell, email your answer to Dr. Powell for some extra credit. It has to be the exact

wording in order to receive the extra credit.

May we also suggest you form STUDY (Prayer) GROUPS!!! One of your classmates may have notes that you don't have or may remember something you didn't!!!

Lastly, if you are taking the MM-MIT (Ministerial In Training Course), please remember to submit notes from each class to Dr. Peyton via engrade.

We hope you are growing and learning. Here are some tips that we hope will help in your study habits.

Concentration Tips

The Problem

In many colleges over 8% of the students report problems concentrating on their studies. Most of these students blame outside distractions for their problems.

Many research studies manipulating noise levels and distractions have found that such disturbances may increase, decrease, or not even affect concentration. These researchers have therefore concluded that distracters don't cause concentration problems directly. It is the way the distracters are interpreted by the students that disrupts their study.

Creating a Study Environment

[1] Find a place to study and keep it for study only.

[2] Tool-up the environment with all study needs.

[3] Control noise level and the visual environment to acceptable levels.

[4] Avoid relaxing while working; create a work atmosphere.

When to Study

[1] Best during the day and early evening; you'll remember better.

[2] Best when there are the fewest competing activities in progress.

[3] Best when adequate rest periods are provided.

[4] Stop studying when fatigue or lack of attention occurs.

How to Study & Concentrate

[1] When distracters are present, become intensely involved.

[2] Keep a pad of paper handy to jot down extraneous thoughts that cross your mind while studying, get them out of your mind and on to paper.

[3] Set study goals before you begin each period of study

(number of pages, number of problems, etc.)

[4] Design adequate rewards after specified goals are attained.

[5] Break-up the content of study by mixing up subjects and building in variety and interest and removing boredom.

[6] Make the most of rest periods-do something quite different.

[7] Don't try to mix work and play.

[8] Start with short study periods and build to longer periods only as fast as you maintain concentration.

[9] If necessary, make a calendar of events to clear your mind of distractions.

[10] Realize that you won't lose friends, respect, or a "good time" just because you're studying... these will keep.

[11] Plan the length of your study period by the amount of material you have decided to cover, not by the clock. (Often the clock is one of the most serious distracters.)

Diagnostic Matters

It is probably necessary that you identify which subjects are related to the most serious concentration problems. You may notice that you really don't give yourself a chance with these subjects because of the time, order, or place you use to study. It may also be valuable to assess what your motives are for studying in the first place? What is your reward for your efforts?

BA 101 – The Pentateuch
A study of the first five books of the Old Testament. Called The Pentateuch or The Five Books of Moses is to familiarize the earnest Bible student with the origin of mankind and his relationship with the Creator. This study of the Bible’s first Five Books, Genesis, Exodus Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy is a consecutive history covering the first two thousand five hundred years of human history; they constitute a progressive spiritual unity, setting forth, in their main features, what has been described as “the order of the experience of the people of God in all ages.” In addition, these first Five Books of the Old Testament will give us a progressive fivefold revelation of God in His relationship with His people.

CE 502 History of the Scriptures
A historical study of how the Bible has been preserved and handed down to this present day generation. This study will equip the student to answer such questions as: How and when did the books of the Bible have their origin? In what sense are these books different from other books? How have these books been preserved and transmitted to us? In order to gain the answers to these questions the student will span thousands of years, travel to various regions of the world and into the hearts of countless unnamed people whose first love was the Word of God. It was God's purpose that by means of a written record He be revealed to all ages and tongues as Creator and Redeemer.

BA 202 – Minor Prophets
A study of the last twelve books of the Old Testament – Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zepha-niah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi called the Minor Prophets to familiarize the earnest Bible student with the themes, messages and structure of these prophetic writings.

TH 506 - Hermeneutics
Hermeneutics may be described as the development and study of theories of the interpretation and understanding of texts. In contemporary usage in biblical studies, hermeneutics refers to the study of the interpretation of biblical texts. It is the study of theories and methods of the interpretation of all texts and systems of meaning.

We will be offering one Summer School Class via online:

BA 304 - Hebrew Christian Epistles.

This course examines the structure and content of the final nine writings of Saint Paul of Tarsus. Particular emphasis will be placed on the Pauline Epistles to Hebrews (Israelites), James, 1 and 2 Peter, Jude, and 1, 2, 3 John. This course will also look at how these truths can be applied to the lives of Christians and the Church today.This course will give an overview of The Revelation of Jesus Christ as given unto the Apostle John.

The textbooks for this class are Explore the Book, Baxter, J. Sidlow - Zondervan Publisher, Cost $69.00 - $89.00, The Expositor's Bible Commentary - Abridged Edition: New Testament, Kenneth L. Barker, John R. Kohlenberger III-$27.00 - $54.00 and the the Bible- The student will need to read from several versions: KJV, NKJV, AMP, God’s Word version are highly recommended. If you are currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Biblical Studies program, you should have these books in your possession.

This class will begin June 7, 2011 and run through July 30, 2011.

As you continue your studies in MM 502 - Church Administration and continue to understand even the more the importance of the ministry of Adminsitraton, think back to Part 1 where we learned that one of the most compelling examples of leadership in the Old Testament is Nehemiah. In Nehemiah there are a number of important qualities of leadership vision.

The book of Nehemiah involves the story of the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem following the raids of the Babylonian Empire. In Nehemiah we see an incredible ability of a leader not only to lead but to plan, strategize and (very importantly) execute major projects. There are many sides to leadership and management that we can learn from Nehemiah but there is one that stands out. VISION. Nehemiah is a study of the progression of a vision and what is involved for that vision to be executed and to come to pass.

What are the four qualities that were discussed in Part 1 of this course of Nehemiah's vision leadership ability? Submit your answers via ENGRADE to your instructor by March 24, 2011 and you will earn extra credit .

This powerful course (being taught by Minister Marvin Griffin) is a study of the historical bridge of time spanning between the Old Testament and the New Testament. This time frame has been figuratively referred to as the 400 silent years or ‘The Silent Centuries’ between the Old and New Testaments, which was from 400 B.C. to 5 B.C. This course will examine the leading events, as well as the literature of that time which is of great value because they furnish background for the coming and the life of Jesus.

In this course you have been gaining an overview of the history of the interval between the Old and New Testament. You are becoming familiar with the importance of religious development between the Old and the New Testaments. You are gaining an understanding of the origin of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and synagogues since there is no mention of Pharisees, Sadducees or synagogues in the Old Testament as well as the religious contribution made by the rather strange company of men known as “the apocalypists.”

The apocalypists had a role in the religious development of Judaism and the preparation of men’s minds for the coming of Christianity.

This new class being offered at Carolina University of Theology as a graduation requirement is designed specifically for those who sense a definite call into the full-time ministry (Matt. 20:16) of Jesus Christ. The Ministers in Training Course is designed for future ministers as well as current ministers in need of greater training.

In ministry, many times there is more that is "caught as well as taught" (II Tim. 3:10). This class is designed specifically with this in mind. "Hands on" ministry experience is a necessity in every man and woman who believes he or she has a calling upon his or her life.

MM MIT will facilitate the student towards an even greater level of ministerial experience so the student can become intimately acquainted with the "in-workings" of ministry. The student will receive hands on ministerial training and encouragement in fulfilling that calling.

The student will be offered powerful and practical ministerial tools and instructions in how to train and develop leaders (Tit. 1:9, II Tim. 2:2).

Christmas Break and Textbook Orders

"It's beginnng to look a lot like Christmas!!!" For a Christian that little tune should be a jingle in our heads on a daily basis. Even though history lets us know that our Savior was not actually born in December but we need not worry or debate over that because as a truly wise man of G-d puts it, the Lord never actually told us to remember His birth, but to remember His death, burial and (Hallejuah) resurrection.

As you prepare for your final exams (those enrolled on campus), let not your heart become weary in the study and preparation - remember YOU HAVE ALREADY PASSED THE GREATEST TEST YOU WILL EVER HAVE TO TAKE and that is what? That's right, the day you ACCEPTED JESUS CHRIST AS LORD OF YOUR LIFE. It was your choice and you passed with flying colors.

Enjoy your Christmas break, spend time with family and friends and share the Good News - the Gospel of Jesus Christ with someone. Visit a nursing home or a shelter the day after Christmas and share the love of Christ with a hug or a small gift. Often during the Christmas season, many churches and other organizations visit those in the nursing homes and shelters but forgot about them the rest of the year. So do a surprise drive by and visit your local nursing home or shelter the day after Christmas. Something to consider.

Excerpts from "Benefits of a Christian Higher Education" By Gary Ledbetter

College-bound students must take into account an amazing array of details as they finally decide where to enroll. For the Christian student, an additional characteristic should be considered—compatibility with his or her beliefs and lifestyle. My experience as a Christian college graduate and as the father of children who attend a Christian university suggests some benefits you should consider.

Relationships are an important part of any educational experience. Students away from home for the first time will find relational aspects of their education even more crucial. A Christian school is uniquely equipped to provide positive relationships for its students.

For one thing, most Christian schools are smaller. The largest may be only one tenth the size of a state's public university. A smaller student body allows for better attention from the school's faculty and administration. Size and the tendency of believers to watch out for one another can provide encouragement as well as accountability to a young person facing new challenges and opportunities. Certainly, a state school is interested in encouraging students, but a school with a Christian mission statement will be better equipped to meet these needs.

In addition to relationships, a Christian university or college will normally provide an atmosphere more familiar to Christian students. A non-Christian campus, especially a large one, can be quite a shock to incoming freshmen. The more wholesome environment on a Christian campus can provide just as many opportunities without all the distractions and stress. This is not to say that believers should be shut away from the world or be afraid of their neighbors. Higher education is an important job, and some students can find the flash and noise of a big college town detrimental to a good education.

A final benefit of Christian higher education is perhaps the most significant. The quality of a Christian college experience is higher than any other. Christian educators have an additional motivation to do their work with excellence—the call of Christ on their lives to do just that (I Cor. 10:31, Col. 3:17). Quality may also be enhanced by the emphasis on subjects and teaching deemed by God to be of first importance. A biblical focus will inform the manner, content, and even the scope of an educational experience, and Christian schools may be less influenced by cultural (or educational) fads.

A Christian college or university should also teach from a biblical worldview. Ultimately, there is little point in attending a school that calls itself “Christian” if it does not approach all truth as being from God. This is a potential strength as well as a challenge to Christian schools. A biblical worldview will see God as the source of truth in mathematics, science, history, and all other disciplines. Christians believe that God not only made all things, but also knows them intimately. Therefore, His lordship over our studies is not limited to biblical studies.

Not all students have the same needs, not even all Christian students. For many, though, a solid Christian college or university will be the right choice. A Christian school can provide a positive educational experience and a strong biblical foundation for all the things God will call upon them to do in the years that follow.

Scripture: Matthew 5:38-42

38 "You have heard that it was said, `An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' 39 But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; 40 and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; 41 and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you.

"If someone insults you or tries to take advantage of you, how do you respond? Do you repay in kind? Jesus approached the question of just retribution with a surprising revelation of God's intention for how we should treat others, especialy those who mistreat us. When Jesus spoke about God’s law, he did something no one had done before. He gave a new standard based not just on the requirements of justice – giving each their due – but based on the law of grace and love. Jesus knew the law and its intention better than any jurist or legal expert could imagine. He quoted from the oldest recorded law in the world: If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe (Exodus 21:23-25). Such a law today seems cruel, but it was meant to limit vengeance as a first step towards mercy. This law was not normally taken literally but served as a guide for a judge in a law court for assessing punishment and penalty (see Deuteronomy 19:18). The Old Testament is full of references to the command that we must be merciful: You shall not take vengeance or bear any grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD (Leviticus 19:18). If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink (Proverbs 25:21). Do not say, "I will do to him as he has done to me; I will pay the man back for what he has done" (Proverbs 24:29). Let him give his cheek to the smiter, and be filled with insults (Lamentations 3:30).

"Jesus does something quite remarkable and unheard of. He transforms the law of mercy with grace and loving-kindness. Jesus also makes clear that there is no room for retaliation. We must not only avoid returning evil for evil, but we must seek the good of those who wish us ill. Do you accept insults, as Jesus did, with no resentment or malice? When you are compelled by others to do more than you think you deserve, do you insist on your rights, or do you respond with grace and cheerfulness?

"What makes a Christian different from everyone else? What makes Christianity distinct from any other religion? It is grace – treating others, not as they deserve, but as God wishes them to be treated – with loving-kindness and mercy. Only the cross of Jesus Christ can free us from the tyranny of malice, hatred, revenge, and resentment and gives us the courage to return evil with good. Such love and grace has power to heal and to save from destruction. Do you know the power of Christ’s redeeming love and mercy? "

The catered event by an excellent Washington, DC/Northern Virginia local caterer is going to a time of just not good food but good fellowship and an encouraging Word to the Graduates through song, dance and the preached Word. Israel Study Pilgrimage 2010 was an awesome experience for every member of the 21 member group, under the leadership of Dr. John R. Peyton, Carolina University President and senior Pastor of Reconciliation Community Church, Manassas, VA and co-host, Minister Victoria Hearst, of Praise Him Ministries, Ridgeway, CO. From the time we landed in Tel Aviv to traveling to Ariel and planting vineyards on the hills of Samaria to looking with awe at Golan Heights, there was not one dull moment during our time in the Holy Land.

One word that kept coming off the lips of every member of the study group was "WOW". There was much note taking and picture taking, video and audio recording that was done that expanded our Biblical understanding of the nation of Israel and caused the Biblical accounts to come alive.

To walk the streets where our Savior walked, to stand in the region where Hannah prayed, to be baptized in the Jordan River where our Lord was baptized, to "swim" in the Dead Sea, to pray and put prayer requests in the Western Wall and to actually see Golgotha and the evidence that we serve a risen Savior is more than many of us could bear!!!

Well, can you believe this academic year is coming to a close and our summer break begins next week!!!

I know many of you - including our faculty are looking forward to the time off to spend with family, friends and to just take a little break.

This has been an unusual year for the Northern Virginia campus due to the extreme winter weather we experienced which extended our academic year and caused us to lose our Spring Break but our faculty and students were patient and persistent and completed all courses of study.

We were also blessed to have two members of the University staff , one of our NOVA campus students and two of our alumni to be a part of a 21 member group to Israel to be a part of a Study Pilgramage with our University president, Dr. Peyton and co host, Minister Victoria Hearst of Praise Him Ministires. We will be sharing some pictures from our time there. It was a blessing and we pray many of you will be with us next year for our 2011 Study Pilgramage to Israel.

We know that 1 Johyn 5:14-15 gives us the assurance that the confidence we have in the Lord is that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us and if we know that He hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petions that we desire of Him, so we ask that you will please keep our Student Records Administrator, LaShannon Boozer in prayer. Her father died on Saturday, February 27, 2010. Please keep the entire family in prayer during this very difficult time.

We are believing G-d for souls to be drawn unto the kingdom of G-d at the funeral services and that the Lord will use Shannon to minister into the lives of her family members.

The University President has requested that all University Staff stand with our dear sister at the funeral of her father which will be Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in Augusta, Georgia,, therefore Experiential Books (BA 103) will be rescheduled for Monday, March 1, 2010 in lieu of the regularly scheduled Tuesday evening.

Vice President (Professor) Gilbert Bukenya will be at Reconciliation Community Church where the University President, Dr. John R. Peyton is Senior Pastor.

It is truly an honor and priviledge to welcome Vice President Bukenya to the Washington, DC metropolitian area.

We were honored to be welcomed to the home of Vice President Bukenya in September 2009 during our mission trip to Uganda and the Lord used this brother in Christ in a mighty way during our time there as well.

Our annual mission trip to Uganda for 2009 was from Sept. 1- 21. An advance team of 6 which included Dean Carol Powell, Minister Kenny and Pat Wallace, Reggie Banks, Arthur Diggs (all students of Carolina Univeristy of Theology) and Deborah Miller traveled ahead of the group of 60 to prepare the way for their arrival. The rest of the team arrived on the 10th of September with Dr. Peyton-eight of whom are students and alumni of Carolina University of Theology-Gwen Sea (08), Victoria Soberanios (08), Antonio Mason, Michelle Oden, Sarah Siglar, Triane Clowers, Don Byrd, Shannon Boozer (Student Records Administrator), and Minister Marvin Griffin, a member of our faculty.

Our main purpose for returning to Uganda was to minister with Pastor Irene Manjeri, of Bethel Healing Center, Kampala Uganda and to spend time with the children at the Bethel Kids In Needs Home and Oprhanage that Pastor Irene founded and is director of and which we support on a monthly basis. The orphanage is home to 75-100 children. Man of these children's parents have died from Aids but by the grace and miracle of G-d all of these children are aids free!!!

Dr. Peyton encouraged nine other pastors from across the nation to be a part of this powerful missionary trip and their lives have not been the same since their return.

We would ask that you would keep in prayer a 12 member team that will be leaving on February 22, 2010 to Haiti for a short-term mission trip under the leadership of the University's President, Dr. John R. Peyton.

This trip was planned and scheduled in 2009 but we now understand even the more why the Lord appointed this month as the time He would have us in Haiti.

As you know Dr. Peyton is also the senior Pastor of Reconciliation Community Church. Reconciliation Community Church has been supporting two ministries in Haiti since 1998 - Pastor Luc St. Felix, pastor of Missions for Christ, Haiti, Port au Prince and the Sunshine Orphange Home under the direction of the Ganthiers in Petionville. Pastor Luc's ministry includes overseeing over 60 churches in mountain villages as well as schools and feeding centers in the mountain villages of Santo which is about an hour and 45 minutes from Port-au-Prince; in "Fonds-Verettes Trois-Mats" and "Foret Des Pins" which are about two hours from Port au Prince. He also has church and school in Croix-des-Bouquets. Croix-des-Bouquets was a voodoo temple and through the ministry of Pastor Luc, the witchdoctor there was won to Jesus and his place was turned into a church. It is about 45 minutes from Port au Prince as well.

Pastor's Luc's church and training center (where he would bring the pastors under his leadership from the mountain villages to train in the Word of G-d and ministry) was completely destroyed in the earthquake. There were members of the church inside when the earthquake hit. This great man of G-d has lived a life of faith dedicated to winning Haiti for Jesus Christ. Despite the news that is often aired about this island - there are a people of G-d in Haiti winning souls!

The Sunshine Orphange home is home to children who parents have either died or abandoned them (before the earthquake). "Poppa and Momma J" Ganthiers have taken in children for over 25 plus years and are the only parents that many of these children will ever know. (The picture to the left are some of the children at the Sunshine Home. Photo was taken on our last trip in 2006). We know with what has taken place, many more children will need the love and care of Poppa and Momma J.

Dean Carol Powell will also be a part of this trip. Haiti was her first missionary travel in 1998 and she has a (spiritual) daughter in Tros-Mats (Marianna) who she met when in '98 when Mariann was only 5 years old.

What Exactly Is Cabin Fever?

That's the question for today? With the blizzard conditions we are now experiencing in the Washington, DC Metropolitan, Northern Virginia area, the term is being used on a regular basis. What exactly is cabin fever? We have received several emails from students, alumnus and faculty alike, saying they have "cabin fever." Even the weather and news casters on TV keep using the phrase. So what exactly is cabin fever.

Cabin fever is an "idiomatic term for a claustrophobic reaction that takes place when a person or group is isolated and/or shut in, in a small space, with nothing to do, for an extended period (as in a simple country vacation cottage during a long rain or snow). Symptoms include restlessness, irritability, forgetfulness, laughter, and excessive sleeping, distrust of anyone they are with, and an urge to go outside even in the (less miserable) rain, snow or dark." WOW!!! I guess we can say some of us have cabin fever.

Well, we don't want any of our students to suffer from cabin fever, spring fever or any other kind of fever, so watch your emails for some assignments for BA 102 - Old Testament History and BA 103 -Experiential Books.

No, no, you don't have to thank us. We know you are truly appreciative and we love you too.

In Chapter 2 we see satan's Persistence and Job's Paitence.
In Chapter 3 we see Job's Pondering.
In Chapter 1 we see "attack". In Chapter 2, we see Affliction. In Chapter 3, we see Anquish.
There are two possible meanings for the name of Job. One comes from an Arabic root and means "one who turns back (repents). Another derives from a Hebrew root and means "the hated (persecuted one)". How do both of these meanings prefigure the experiences of Job in the book that bears his name. Your answer is worth another 10 points!! Email your answers by January 19, 2010.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year should be more than just a casual greeting or salutation for the disciple of Jesus Christ. It really should be a declaration. In "The Beatitudes", Jesus opens His mouth and taught the multitudes and His disciples a series of of "Blessed are the . . ." A study of the word "Blessed" here in Matthew 5:1-11, would let us know that this word is translated "Happy". So when we say Happy New Year to a fellow believer in Christ or even to a neighbor or to someone in a store, we are actually making a declaration to them that this New Year - a year we have not seen before shall be a Blessed Year. It's a declaration!

You know we have been given that authority and privledge through our relationship with the Lord to speak such things in advance by faith. Let's make a declaration, Carolina University students and alumni that this year will indeed be a Blessed and Happy New Year for the University and for your individual lives and the lives of your loved ones.

And again, Happy New Year!!!

Our Holidays should be Holy Days - For us Christ is a must in Christmas - Our New Year will be Happy because we are blessed of the Lord

In Chapter 14, The Canon of the Scriptures, Josephus is mentioned.Who is Josephus and what role does he plan in the history of the scriptures and specifically in this chapter?

Josephus - An Eyewitness to Christianity

Josephus was a historian who lived from 37 A.D. to about 101 A.D. He was a member of the priestly aristocracy of the Jews, and was taken hostage by the Roman Empire in the great Jewish revolt of 66-70 A.D. Josephus spent the rest of his life in or around Rome as an advisor and historian to three emperors, Vespasian, Titus and Domitian. For centuries, the works of Josephus were read in Europe morethan any book other than the Bible. They are invaluable sources of eyewitness testimony to the development of Western civilization, including the foundation and growth of Christianity in the 1st Century.

Josephus gives us biblical Accounts Outside the Bible

Josephus mentions New Testament events and people in some of his works. For many skeptics, this is viewed as significant evidence against the myth and legend theories that plague early Christianity. Here are some excerpts:

Josephus mentions Jesus in Antiquities, Book 18, chapter 3, paragraph 3 (this paragraph is so phenomenal, that scholars now debate the authenticity of some of the more “favorable” portions of this text):
“Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man; for he was a doer of wonderful works, a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews and many of the Gentiles. He was [the] Christ. And when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men amongst us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him; for he appeared to them alive again the third day; as the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him. And the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day.”

Josephus mentions John the Baptist and Herod in Antiquities, Book 18, chapter 5, paragraph 2:
"Now some of the Jews thought that the destruction of Herod's army came from God, and that very justly, as a punishment of what he did against John, that was called the Baptist: for Herod slew him, who was a good man, and commanded the Jews to exercise virtue, both as to righteousness towards one another, and piety towards God, and so to come to baptism; for that the washing [with water] would be acceptable to him, if they made use of it, not in order to the putting away [or the remission] of some sins [only], but for the purification of the body; supposing still that the soul was thoroughly purified beforehand by righteousness."

Josephus mentions James, the brother of Jesus, in Antiquities, Book 20, chapter 9, paragraph 1:
"Festus was now dead, and Albinus was but upon the road; so he assembled the sanhedrim of judges, and brought before them the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James, and some others, [or, some of his companions]; and when he had formed an accusation against them as breakers of the law, he delivered them to be stoned: but as for those who seemed the most equitable of the citizens, and such as were the most uneasy at the breach of the laws, they disliked what was done."

Josephus mentions Ananias, the High Priest, who was mentioned in Acts 23:2:
“Now as soon as Albinus was come to the city of Jerusalem, he used all his endeavors and care that the country might be kept in peace, and this by destroying many of the Sicarii. But as for the high priest, Ananias he increased in glory every day, and this to a great degree, and had obtained the favor and esteem of the citizens in a signal manner; for he was a great hoarder up of money.”

Thanksgiving Is A Daily Celebration For Discples of Christ

As we approach Thanksgiving and spend time with family and friends, as followers of Jesus Christ, remember that giving thanks unto the Lord is a daily part of our life.

As the song says, "Give thanks with a grateful heart. Give thanks to the Holy One Give Thanks because He has given Jesus Christ His Son. And now let the weak say I am strong. Let the poor say I am rich. Because of what the Lord has done for us. Give Thanks."

Take time today and during this holday as you sit around the table to give thanks unto the Lord for every family member present with you and for those who wish they could be with you as well.

CE 502 - History Of The Scriptures

Praise the Lord!!! Just a reminder that in lieu of your midterm examinatin, you will be responding for a book report based on the readings and study material discussed in Chapter 10 of your textbook. Below is a description of your assignment:

Chapter 10 – Book Report Assignment

According to your text, the Westcott-Hort text, along with the English Revised Version, dealt the final blow to the Received Text upon which the KJV was based. This will be discussed in later chapters.

There is much dispute still today about which of these texts is amore faithful representation of the original Greek NT.

The Textus Receptus or the Greek text of B.F. Westcott and FJA Hort. I like what one writer stated in my research findings said, “All text families are doctrinally orthodox. A dispassionate evaluation of evidence is very much to be preferred to the emotionally charged tirades that characterize much of the current discussion” (Douglas Kutiket, 1996)

In other words – you do the research and come to your conclusion.

Your homework assignment is to read : “Common Sense in the Midst of Conflict (A Brief Discussion of the Controversy over the King James 1611 Bible and Modern Versions) and do a report on it.

In the report you are to state

1. State your opinion of the book
2. State what the author was attempting to do
3. Do you agree or disagree with his findings
4. Upon what do you based your conclusion on (if you agree or disagree).
Report paper will be due November 24. Length minimum of two pages – max three pages.

2. All written assignments must be typed double-spaced and legible.

Creating a Place to Get Your Work Done

If you’re like most distance learners, you love the freedom of learning at home. You revel in the joy of taking The Pentateuch final exam in your pajamas and appreciate the fact that a snack from the kitchen is only a few steps away. But home distractions can become a problem, particularly if you haven’t organized a special place to get your work done. If you feel overwhelmed by the constant distraction of phone calls, family or roommate interruptions, and disorganization, you need to create an environment where you can really get to work.

What is a Study Spot?

A Study Spot is a special place you put together just for completing the work you need to get done. Instead of working on the bed, near the television, or just about anywhere in the chaos of home life, you can create a place that is best suited to actually doing your work and doing it well. Most people set a few ground rules for their Study Spots to ensure that they won’t be faced with the normal distractions while their busy. When done correctly, creating a Study Spot can help save you time by letting you focus on your work and finish sooner.

Organization is Essential

The first step to Study Spot success is organizing the place that will be home to your studies. Walk around your home at its busiest hour (if you have family or roommates living with you, this will probably be when everyone gets back from school or work). Find the place that is the quietest in all the commotion. It may be in the corner of your bedroom or perhaps you have a den or a small room that isn’t being used. Some people use a section of their garage. Whatever place you choose, make sure it is large enough that you won’t feel cramped and check to see that the temperature can always be kept at a comfortable level. As soon as you find your place, begin organizing the materials you will need and setting up your Study Spot. Completing the following steps will leave you with a well-organized, work-ready area you can call your own:

1. Purchase a traditional desk. One of the benefits of using an actual desk is that your work-related materials are always going to be near. Most desks have multiple drawers for supplies and room to hold a computer without getting in the way of your writing area.
2. Get a good chair. This is one of the most important tools of getting your work done at home. Go to an office supply store and invest in a chair that you actually want to sit in. Hard wood or metal chairs are uncomfortable and often deter people from sitting down for the time necessary to get their work done.
3. Organize your supplies. Make sure that all the supplies you need each day are easily reachable from your desk. It’s easy to become distracted from your work if you constantly have to leave your studies to go look for supplies in another area of the house. Put books, pens, pencils, erasers, and everything else you need in the drawers of your desk. Make sure that you have all necessary textbooks and course material questions available. I If you study through mail, make sure you have the needed stamps and addresses at your desk.
4. Add your special touch. Personalize your Study Spot and make it your own. If you like to study with background music, bring in you c.d. player and a bunch of your favorite c.d.s. If you like to munch while you work, put a box of your favorite snacks by your workspace. If you’re an art fan, put your favorite paintings on the wall. Some people like to hang up inspirational posters or magazine clippings of people who are in the profession they are working on becoming a part of. Add anything that will help make your Study Spot feel like home and keep you focused on the prize.

Study Spot Rules

Once you’ve created the perfect Study Spot, set a few ground rules for yourself and anyone else you live with. Rules can help keep distractions away and keep you focused. Start with just a few that will be easy to follow and add more as you become more disciplined in your work. Some examples of rules that people have found useful are:

• Work time is between the hours of 7 and 11 a.m. I won’t plan anything else during that time.
• The ringer on the phone is always turned off while I’m working.
• When I put a sign on the door, family members and friends should know that I’m working and not disturb me.
• I will take one big break in the middle of my work, but will stop taking lots of small breaks throughout the morning.

Study Spot rules are very personal and are meant to help you work in the way that’s best for you. When you decide on the rules that will help you study, talk to the people you live with and explain what you need them to do to help out.

The Study Spot Process

Creating the perfect Study Spot with the perfect rules won’t happen overnight. But, with careful planning and persistence, you can create an environment that is perfect for your distance learning studies. As you work on refining your Study Spot, you will find that you finish your work more efficiently and have more time to do the activities you really want to do. In the case of the Study Spot, organization is freedom.

We are always striving to better serve you here at your University. At a recent new student orientation at our Administrative Campus in Northern Virginia, one of our new students suggested the idea of a "blog" for the University.

We really saw it as a confirmation because we had researched this idea and had indeed started one at the end of 2008 but never posted it.
